Is It A Fly Or Is It A Lure?

I saw an interesting post on Instagram, about a year ago, talking about a new concept of adding "Wiggle Tails" to Pike Fly's for additional attraction. One of the posted comments that stuck out to me was, "When Does Your Fly Become A Lure?" Poses an interesting question, but seems to me like its the "Chicken & The Egg" question all over again. Regardless, here's my take on the post.

Wiggle / Marabou Tail Fly

In some parts of Europe, mainly Scandinavia, the Pike fly fishing scene has been pushing the boundaries of this question for several years now.  This clan of fly tying extremists, seem to be adding anything to their flies to get a leg up on big Pike. Wiggle Tails, Rattles, grotesque amounts of Flashabou and articulated flies that push the twelve inch mark. Really quite brilliant! But has some "Trout" purists snubbing their noses at these anglers. I am not one of the "purists", I am all for innovation! Hence my fist two attempts on a "Wiggle Tail Fly" shown in these pictures. How these two "Fly's" will preform is yet to be determined and I can't wait to toss them just as much as I can't wait to toss out big stone flies this season.

Wiggle Tail Only
Trouble with these new innovative patterns is the classification / perception of what we call a fly and not with the "Fly" itself. This is where I feel the comment about fly vs. lure becomes one of the same. Are we as a fly fishing community, not trying to "lure" a fish to strike? Weather it be on a size twenty Blue Wing Olive (B.W.O.) or a 4/0 twelve inch articulated bait fish pattern, we all chase the strike just like bass boat Johnny.

So I will close with this statement and leave you to ponder your own take. At the end of the day weather you call it a "Fly" or a "Lure" we as a band of fishermen / women are all after the same thing, FISH!

P.S. The Fly Fishing Community Just Does It In Style :) !
